Spring
Spring is a special time in Lake City. Conditions and
weather will vary from day to day, and by altitude.
You may be able to take a wonderful hike at a lower
elevation, and go snowshoeing the same day up
higher. Count on warmer, sunnier days (don't forget
the sunscreen) and lots of animals coming out with
their young.
Springtime picnic spots might include the Lake City
Town Park, Wupperman campground, Red Mountain
Gulch day use area, or Wade's Gulch (just a little way
up the Round Top Mountain Road right near town).
Broken ice and open streams mean it's fishing time!
Our fishing stores and guides can provide you with
equipment, licenses, and tips on the best spots for
this time of year.
Spring is one of the best times to view wildlife at Lake
San Cristobal. Not only are year-round resident
animals more active, but migrating birds like to hang
out at the far ends of the lake as well.
Before you go out to watch the animals, read this
wildlife viewing guide from the Colorado Department
of Wildlife.
Spring back country skiing is no finer than in the San
Juan Mountains. Depending on conditions, you might
be able to head up Engineer Pass or Cinnamon Pass
for a few turns. Unfortunately, avalanches occur
more often in the spring, so check conditions and be
prepared before you go!
As always, Leave No Trace.
