SILVER THREAD
National Scenic Byway
The Silver Thread starts at Blue Mesa Reservoir,
traverses sagebrush country, and winds its way
along the Lake Fork of the Gunnison River, over two
mountain passes, across the Continental Divide, and
follows the Rio Grande River.

It is possible to drive the entire 120 miles of the Silver
Thread in one day.  However, it is much more fun
and interesting to take your time and explore all of its
features.

Highlights of the byway include the historic mining
towns of Lake City and Creede, and other landmarks
such as the Alferd Packer Massacre Site, the
Slumgullion Slide, Windy Point Overlook, Bristol Head,
the Rio Grande Pyramid Overlook, North Clear Creek
Falls, and Wagon Wheel Gap.  For detailed
information, pick up a copy of the Silver Thread
guide from the visitor center in Lake City.
