| Alpine Loop National Backcountry Byway Outdoor Magazine rated the Alpine Loop as one of the best mountain bike rides in America. Tours of several days are possible, with extended trips into Silverton, Ouray, and Telluride adding even more variety. With a starting elevation of 8671 feet in Lake City and passes reaching over 12,000 feet, the Alpine Loop is an intense, but worthwhile, journey. Mountain bikes are available for rent from local businesses. Cottonwood Creek The Cottonwood Creek road gets very light vehicle traffic. Combined with the gradual grade and great scenery, this trail is a good choice for your mountain bike ride. You’ll pass through aspens and spruce, and perhaps see a seasonal waterfall. The trail is about 6 miles in length. Wager Gulch This 3.4 mile trail follows a 4x4 road up Wager Gulch to the ghost town of Carson, one of the best preserved sites in Colorado. Abandoned in 1902, now Carson is privately owned, and visitors are allowed to visit the town as long as the buildings and land are respected. Another 1.4 miles along the road will bring you to the Continental Divide at 12,400 feet.
