The founders of Lake City knew that establishing local governments and civic organizations would help to build a solid, successful community. Buildings such as the Hinsdale County Courthouse and the Town of Lake City's Armory Hall are still used today by citizens. The Courthouse, in fact, is the longest continually-operating courthouse in the state.
Today, several civic groups own and maintain buildings in the Historic District, including the Crystal Lake Masonic Lodge #34, the Pioneer Jubilee Women's Club, the Hinsdale County Historical Society, the Lake City Public Library, and the Moseley Arts Center.
